In attempting to balance my M130 carbs, I came across something that makes no sense to me. It is on the MB CD, and is repeated in the Haynes manual.

It says basically when adjusting the idle stops, allow the actuating lever to raise the vent until it "cannot be raised any more" and then allow a 2.3 mm gap between the acutating lever and the idle stop.

This makes no sense to me. Shouldn't it be to bring the actuating arm to where it just starts to raise the vent and allow a 2.3 mm gap between the arm and the stop?

Under the first scenario, the idle stop would not be used at all, and the vent would in effect be functioning as the idle stop. Under the second, the vent valve would be opened 2.3 mm when the engine was at idle.

Opinions?

Chuck

I guess the translation from the German is at fault. After all, it makes perfect sense if you have the carb upside down.

Yea, I remember that. Since one of my valves was missing anyhow I never bothered with the other one. I just let it "vent however it wanted to".

There is another description (sort of) in the adjustment manual at the following link. Still talks about the "vertical pin lift".

No problem. Based on both my experience and what others (including some certified Benz mechanics)say, they are not that important. Consider that in the US they were removed in 1972 (EPA strikes again) so that the carbs were internally vented. The vent valves would allow (if/when adjusted correctly) the fuel vapors to vent to the atmosphere (externally) at idle and engine shutoff.

Don't worry about them.
