1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal

How do you remove the exterior trim around the windows on the 2 door 114 chassis? I need to remove it to fix some rust, and I was able to get the rear lower piece off, but cannot figuire out how the top piece comes off.

Interestingly, the Body and Chassis manual, vol. 2, #SM1205, only details the procedure for the sedan. Sorry I can't be of any help. I would hate to even venture a guess and have you wind-up damaging the trim.

But, that said...if it is much the same as the sedan, section 68-5 states...

Embellisher on Rear Pillar
1. Press the embellisher (1 in photo) out of the lower plastic clips (2 in photo) by applying a wooden or plastic wedge underneath.

2. Push embellisher upward and take it out of the plastic insert.

Install is reverse of removal.

Wait a minute Thorsen...which windows, exactly are in question? Are you talking about the side, rear quarter window trim or the back glass (rear window)?? If you can clarify, the book does give the gouge on the rear glass trim. You said "windows" plural, but, just to be sure.

Tom,

See attached. I need to remove at least the trim outlined in red, and ultimately the trim outlined in blue too. I have a suspicion that the blue has to come off before the red can.

Thanks for your help.

I am 99.9% certain that the trim piece outlined in red is removed by pulling it AWAY from the car at the BOTTOM According to the manual, there is a plastic clip toward the bottom. Once the bottom is popped loose from the pillar, it is held at the top with what appears to be a simple "crimp" over the rain gutter. That has to be why the manual indicates "prying the trim away from the pillar using a wedge. You can see (with a bright flashlight) where the steel rain gutter meets the trim toward the bottom. Look at the paper thin gap between the two. If I had to go out right now to remove that piece from my car, I would insert a micro thin wedge bewteen the two pieces (rain gutter and trim) and carefully wedge it out.

For an honest answer though, I would drop forum member "Mike D" a note. Although I've had several 114 coupes, I've never been that far into one. Mike, has.

Hopefully, that leads you in the right direction.

Best,

Tom

Give me a couple of hours to get batteries for my camera and I'll post some pictures and instructions. Do not begin prying. There are screws in the top chrome rail which must be removed.

Thanks! I had guessed that the whole trim/seal assembly is attached from the inside.

I'm posting this in a couple of parts. Bear with me as I'm trying to make sense out of all the photos I have in my Benz folders.
1st pic is what happens if you try to pry the trim off.1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim001.jpg

The first step is to remove the rubber window molding. It sits in a groove and might have glue on it. Heat gun, flat screw driver or putty knife and patience!

Next step is to remove the windshield pillar trim. It is held on by a clip arrangement. Push it forward and the clips will release. Kinda like an old trouser fastener.
1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim003.jpg

Next, remove the upper interior trim. It is held in by means of a post and slot arrangement. Push it forward and it will come off.

Now the rear interior molding. It comes FORWARD, not up! Same attaching arrangement as the windshield pillar.

Please ignore the tape. I used it to hold the trim pieces on the car. Sorry about the resolution but I thought it was better to give you a large picture and I had to drop it to 256 colors to fit the size restriction.

Now for the good stuff!

Remove the lower exterior chrome. It is held on by the same type of clips used on the window weather stripping. I use a screwdriver and a board (to protect the interior) to remove the clips.

Picture #8 shows you two screws to remove from the bootom of the rear chrome piece.1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim008.jpg

Now remove the front weather strip channel by removing ALL the screws! Double check to make sure you get them! It might have a little glue or gummy corrosion holding it. Heat gun and a thin putty knife will do the trick. Loosen it from the front lower and then back to the rear. Lower the front to get clearance and pull the strip forward. It might have a slip connector holding it to the rear piece.

Finally, we're getting there! Remove the rear weather strip channel by removing the screws and sliding it forward.

Remove these two screws attaching the rear chrome to the roof line.
1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim12.jpg

Remove the screws holding the upper chrome.1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim13.jpg

Remove the top chrome by sliding a thin blade beneath it from the inside to break the seal, work the entire chrome piece out and up to clear the rain gutter.
1972 250C Exterior Trim Removal-trim14.jpg

And there is the bugger! Remove it and grind and fill away!

When you re-attach the long upper chrome and weather stripping channel you will need to use a line-up punch to align the screw holes.

My oh my! Geeze, Mike, I'm bringing the 280CE to you when it comes time to strip it down. That, or I'll fly you up to Seattle.

Thanks, for the pictorial.

Here's a few links you guys may be interested in if you don't already have them.

Here's a tip, too...If you download the Google toolbar and right-click on a page, go to "page Info," then "translate page into English." It does a good enough job that you can actually find the websites useful.

Mike -

Thank you very much. That is extremely helpful. I was able to pull it all off in about 20 minutes.
