1970 280SEL - left vent removal - please help
GOT IT! It came out 5 minutes after I posted this - no idea how I'll ever get it back in though.
For most of you guys, this is probably an easy job, for me it's not. My winter project is the removal, refinishing and installation of the dash wood, together with an new heater lever unit. It is taking me forever, but I am doing ok. I have removed everything, the A/C unit is on the floor. All that keeps me from taking the main wood panel on the driver's side out is the fact that I can't seem to figure out how to get the left vent out. I've read through the great description on jaimekop.com. My vents are attached differently, though. The right one has a wire in U-shape with the open ends attached to the vent and the other side hooked into a hole in the sheet metal of the dash. No spring. On the passenger side it's easy - it can be unhooked from the glove box. Not so on the left. No access at all from under the dash. The fuse box is very close, the whole area is solid wires. So how in the world do I get that thing out? I am considering destroying it with a dremel tool - but then reinstallation of the replacement wouldn't be possible. Has anybody come across this before, and what did you do? Thanks! Dietrich Last edited by dspeer; 02-03-2008 at 12:07 AM. |

If you take the gauges/instrument cluster out, you may have better access through that hole. I had to take the tach out of my 111 to get to that spring. I assume you have a 108 and by pulling the cluster forward and slightly out (careful with the temp and oil capilaries) you should be able to get to it. I remember doing this on my old 114 250C.
Good luck, Bert
