Should I use solid core plug wires on my 72 350slc?

Yes, originals were solid core with a replaceable resistor connector end on the spark plug end of each wire. Replacements may be more conventional using a carbon core resistor wire and no replaceable resistor on the end. I would try to find the original style if possible.

You can get Beru wires that are close to original or OEM from MB- they have resistors at each end and a copper wire. These wires were designed to be used with non-resistor plugs. This would be my first choice if cost is not a factor.

If you buy Bosch wires, despite what it says on the box, they will be copper cored, but they don't have the resistors that the OE wires had. I have these on my car but use Bosch WDR7DC+ resistor plugs. My car is a US Spec 350SL with 4.5L engine. I bought the wires & plugs from Arizona ********. Car runs really well!

Thanks.

The car has beru wires and caps. I bought this car a few months ago. The wires, caps, rotor and rotor cap was changed a year ago. The price was nok:16000,- Thats 3000 US dollar. Yes!!! threetousand!!

I'm planning on innstalling a pertronix ignitor II on the car. Can this be used with solid core wires. Have someone tried this combination? The plugs are bosch wr7dc.

I don't think Pertronix recommend the Ignitor II for MBs with original copper wires. I have an Ignitor I on my 350SL and although it eliminates the points and their maintenance, I don't see any significant change in performance.

I also wonder whether the car would run very well with Beru wires with built in resistors and wr7dc plugs which are resistor plugs? If your car is not running too well, maybe changing to non-resistor plugs could be a first step before buying the Pertronix?

If you really want to use an Ignitor II , then you will need new plug wires. Maybe ask Pertronix or seller like Retro-Rockets what they would recommend.

Whoa, an honest review! I found the same thing on my old cars. The difference between old worn out maladjusted points and either new points or an ignitor is marked however.

When I installed mine, my points were only about a year old, so a good test

One reason to change the points to Ignitor, would be if the MB transistorized switchbox is suspect. The Pertronix can eliminate the switchbox if a new coil is installed at same time. I may do this someday, but still not sure why if car is running well

The reason for this type of modification is it is Point Conversion. That is the weakness of the old Technology Ignition systems.. Don't expect a marked improvement if your old system was up to par, as the orig Switchgear is actually more robust than the Pert one is.
The improvement is the elimination of Mechanical switching. Hall Effect princible and Optical Switching eliminate the moving parts [ points] , so the results are rock steady Ignition specs that hold the values that mechamical switching can not due to mechanical lobe and contact wear.
Your lawn mower doesn't even have points anymore ..they are a thing of the past b/c they were a constant maint. item. They went out with Horse Shoes.
