Swordplay inside distributor?

Hello!
75 mercedes 280 6-cylinder, car started running bad, inside distributor, rotor is taking gashes out of distributor cap.

My guess is something really went south in distributor? Thankful for any and all help.
Older car, much older first time mercedes owner!!!

Is the rotor good? Have you cranked the engine with the distributor cap off? If so does the rotor shaft wobble? does it have any play when moved side to side? I am assuming that there would be a bearing or just close tolerances that would keep the rotor shaft centered in the distributor housing...

Oh. I thought you were talking about salesmen fighting. That I could believe. In any case if you can post a photo of the damage? That might help. Was the rotor fully seated? I would just check the shaft for play side to side and up and down. Was the rotor coming apart? Have you tried a new rotor and cap?

The bushing locating the dist shaft may be gone. Or the shaft could be broken.

You didn't just put in a new rotor by any chance did you? It could be too big if you did.
