I sold a transmission to a lady who has had her brother install it. Her brother informed me that once everything is back together, the transmission appears to be binding and hence not allowing the starter motor turn.

I have never heard of such a thing and I'm curious as to what would cause this.

I would be grateful for any thoughts or opinions on the matter.

I once installed a transmission on my '65 Mustang and didn't get the torque converter fully seated on the input shaft before bolting the bell housing to the engine. I was able to get it the bolts tight but it didn't seem right.

Pulled it back apart and found that I'd actually bent the converter.

Maybe something similar happened to him?

It does sound like something isn't lined up properly, like the flex plate or something else.

Could be a starter-flywheel issue. He/she may need a new starter. Could also be a busted tooth on the flywheel. Or something got misaligned and/or tightened too much.

Hello,

Yes, I agree with Michael, it sounds like the torque converter was not seated. This kind of mis-alignment will normally ruin the front pump on the transmission.

got to agree with the consensus here, torque converter is not properly seated. I misaligned the inner shaft on a jag I was working on, everything bolted back up almost fine, it looked OK but didnt feel right. when i went to start the car it was just solid, the starter engaged and after a few seconds let out the blue smoke. I thought it was the starter, replaced it (a real PITA with the top bolt on the XJ40 jag), same thing. the engine was just bound up solid. Had to split the transmission off again and reseat it, luckily no damage and she started up first time (second time around)
