My 280SE 4.5 would start to get hot at idle. The hydraulic fan was turning at idle, but it wouldn't pull enough air to make a difference. I had mine changed, and what a difference. The engine temp stays around 180 degrees now.

After my fan clutch was replaced on my 280SE 4.5, at idle the engine wouldn't get hot enough for the auxiliary fan to come on. After driving home on the freeway for an hour in 90 degree weather, I pulled in the garage, and the temp got up to about 190 degrees (I have a 190 degree temp switch), and the electric fan came on.

Take a rolled up newspaper and stick it in the fan blades. If the fan stops = fan clutch is shot.
