old 75 240 d that's been sitting

My very first post! I bought this old girl for $300. It has no rust and was simply missing the radiator, battery, and oil cooler. Once these are in and the hoses are connected, i'm going to clean the gas tank, blow air through the fuel lines and replace the battery.

What else should i do before i try and start it if the car has been sitting for at least ten years.?

Thanks.

The 75 240D may have have an oil level that needs to be checked in the injection pump vs the next generation pressure oiled pump. Does it have a cap on top of the injection pump that reads "OEL"? It is checked by removing a plug on the side of the pump. If so, check it before trying to start the engine or the pump will run dry.

See if the engine turns by hand before using the starter, if it does good. If not try to free it up by hand first.

Change the oil and filter before starting it. It has a unique oil filter that has a primary and secondary oil filter in the same housing all held in and aligned by one central bolt. It is messy and takes a couple of oil changes to get comfortable with the procedure.

Are you familiar with the pull cable start/shut-off and glow plug heating element?

Good luck and keep us posted!!!

Cool! Another W115 coming back to life!

Have you located a radiator/oil cooler? Whatcha gonna do for oil cooler lines?

When you pull the oil filter canister you should find two separate filters, the primary screen and the fine filter (the one you replace). The primary screen should be cleaned and inspected for rips/tears in the nylon mesh. If it's good simply put it back in, on top of the fine filter you replace, paying attention to its orientation (holes in the center top should be up).

Yeah, the injection pump oil in that car is not linked to the oil in the engine, so it's a good idea to check/refresh it prior to starting the engine. It's a service item that should be done at every oil change.

Another service item is the oil bath air filter. It should be cleaned out and fresh oil added.

Don't forget the fuel filters. You might not need to clean out the fuel tank, unless it's developed algae growth/rust.

Where are you? Pics of the car?
