W115 300D 1976 - neutral safety switch bypass
Hello everyone,
I've seen several posts for where the electrical connector is located for the neutral safety switch on W123 and W126 models, but none for a W115 300D. Is it in the engine compartment (W126), cabin (W123), or under the car somewhere? Thanks for any and all tips, D.

It's been quite a while since I've messed with it but I seem to recall it being on the LH frame rail by the vacuum booster. Inside the engine compartment.

Bypass
What are you trying to cure? I agree with the other MikeD; it is by the left side area where the wiring travels to the passenger cabin (most everything wiring wise is there for W114/115...

MAKDUFF3 asked "What are you trying to cure?", to which I reply:
Trying to temporarily bypass the switch because it is causing an occasional no-start condition. Wiggling the shifter USUALLY solves it, but I know that won't last forever, and the problem is getting worse. I'll order a new neutral safety switch on Monday, but was just hoping there was a convenient place to jump the connection in case wiggling stops working! |

Are you sure that it is not your shifter bushings?

x2 on checking the shifter bushings. If the shifter lever is anything less than tight and silent, you likely have one or more bushings missing. Big dead giveaway is a "clink" noise when you change gear. Sloppy shifter caused by loose or missing shifter bushings is a very common cause of no-start problems.

Bushings are pretty good, but the dead giveaway is that it is spotty even when moved into neutral. It can take several minutes to get the starter to activate at all by slowly moving the shift lever around. I have other MBs with far sloppier shifter levers that do not behave this way, so I'm pretty sure the switch is shot.

I am having the same issue with the exact same car, is it possible to bypass this feature? She wouldn't restart today in parking lot until I tried neutral

Fix the car, don't bypass the neutral safety feature. Not having a neutral safety sw is massively unsafe as the engine will start in gear then the car will drive away.
