newbie here

Ok people, i bought a 1972 mercedes 230 4dr about 2yrs ago. Its a dual carb staight six, auto. I paid $2500CND for the car. The body is in really good shape but had some problems with the break system and a rusted out floor. Total cost after repairs is $3800.
I have doubts about the cars actual age and model number. Could it be wrong? Im going by the ownership papers and the badgeing.
I know nothing about this car, i just love how it looks.

Now for the questions.

The car pulls to the right while braking. Is this common? What could it be and can i fix it myself.
The Break lights dont work. Its not the bulbs.
A red light on the dash is on and never turns off? I think its the emergency break light not turning off but not sure. Its on the left hand side of the cluster. How can i fix this?
The transmishing has a knocking sound only when the car is in gear. Is this bad or is this common??
There is a smell comming from the heater vents.
The dash lights wont come on when the lights are on.
I think only one of the carbs are working (looking from the front end, its the rear carb).
The car shifts into first very fast, and revs very high at about 80kmh. Can i fix this my self?

I love this car and really would like it to be in a working condition.
Any help would be really great!

It's hard to diagnose car troubles via the Net but I'll try.

Brakes pull -
Plugged brake hose or seized caliper or contaminated pads.

Brake lights out but bulbs OK -
Corroded bulb sockets or corroded fuse or bad brake-light switch at pedal.

Brake light on dash stays on -
Handbrake switch stuck or brake reservoir fluid level switch stuck or brake fluid level low.

Smelly heater -
Mold/mildew in heater or something crawled in there and died or the heater blower motor is
burning up.

The 6 cyl W114-230 was built up through '75 so your car could be a '72 230. In 1970 the W114-230 was replaced by the W114-250 for the US market but I don't know about Canada.

Will need more information and symptoms on your carb problems, Do a Forum search for lots of Zenith carb information.

These engines rev about 3300 RPM at 100 km/hr (62 mph). If yours revs that high or higher at 80 (50 mph) the trans may be slipping or not shifting into 4th gear.

Happy Motoring, Mark
