Shifter Ball Socket For 220S

RE: 1963 220S,
The mech looked at the car today and told me what I already knew, the shifter is loose.
What do you all know about the mechanism in the column?
It's manual on the column BTW.
He said maybe the ball sockets were worn out and that maybe the rods inside were still good and the linkage box on the firewall
might still be good.
But, he said as far as getting a replacement, he'd have to research or maybe I'd have to get a used part,
or that the column mechanism was one unit I'd have to buy as a whole.

Those parts are still available from MB or MB Classic. Call Tom Hanson at Caliber Motors Wholesale, he is good on vintage parts.

If it's anything like the ponton 220S, you've got a few one dollar nylon bushings in there that may have turned to mush. Has this mechanic worked on an old MB like this before?

Are you talking about nylon bushings in the column? There's some on the firewall linkages that I'm aware of.
The mechanic knows these things really well.

'The slop feels like its related to whats in the column.

From your decription, it is hard to know where the "slop" originates. There are two nylon bushings at the top of the shift column under the steering wheel. These are also available from MB, and relatively easy to replace. You need to start checking at one end and go all the way thru. good luck, Ed
