W123 rim selection

Which rims should I put on the car, the steel ones 1)with or 2)without the holes or the 3)aluminum ones with the holes? Seems there 3 choices and two different wheel cover clips.. which I can sort out later. I am going to have new tires mounted on four rims for the "82" TD I'm fixing up for myself. I'll have "painted to match" wheel covers and I find too many choices among my parts cars. Is there a preference between the steel or aluminum rims? (not talking the alloys here but the ones painted black that look just like the steel ones) I will spiff them up a little and paint them black before having the tires mounted, but which ones?? I would lean toward the steel ones but,......Any ideas as to which are mo better?

Is this just a " style " question ?
Whatever you decide remember that there are different lug bolts to match them....

I saw those pics of your car and I gota say shes a nice looking ride, I like the treditional "wheel" look but that doesnt mean I wouldnt like your 116, that dark color is nice with the tinted glass. I had my Moca brown, 240Ds glass done.

Greg

Its really not a style issue, they are all just plane black looking rims under the wheel cover, right
I was wanting to know if anyone had any preferences as to which rim is under the wheel cover...maybe no diff

There are only two different size lug nuts, tho
right?

I was disappointed in the tires available in 14"

So I went to the 15" 126 alloys... I'm really happy w/ the looks and the tire choices.

yes, there are short lugs for steel rims, slightly longer lugs for the 14" alloys and bizarre 'collared' lugs for the 126 alloys...

good luck,
RObert

Robert:

what tire size are you running with the 15 inch wheels and did you notice any difference in performance and/or fuel mileage?

I changed a set of aluminums in favor of steelies (4 slot version) on my 240D because the aluminum wheels were all bent. Got a better ride but definitely noticed a decrease in off the line acceleration.

Bottom line is aluminum performs better but is less sturdy. If you use them, make sure they are straight before mounting tires. I can't speak to the steel wheels with holes, but they might be the best compromise.

Make sure you get the right wheel cover clips to match the wheel style.

I,m thinking I will just stick with the steel ones. Still haven't figured out the clip thing. They dont list them here or at Rustys. The steel rims come in two verities, the ones with the holes "all around" (the "painted black aluminum" ones are this design) or the "regular". I,ll sort it out eventually

What Rick said is what I was going to say....
I only know of two styles of lug bolts... they look different on top...for ID purposes... but the important thing is where they meet the wheel under the head... the steel and aluminum have different angles for the holes I think.. so you are putting the force in too small an area if you mismatch them....or something like that... anyway MB says use the correct ones for each style.

not to drag this thing out too far but the only two types of lug nuts I know about (for 123s) are the two different lengths, the longer ones being for the "alloys" (not used with wheel covers) Roger, Roger??

Rick...thats amazing you could notice the diff

There are two types of factory lugs in two different sizes (short and long in 12mm and 14mm I believe), but you can get any length you want in aftermarket lugs.
