Do you have this lug bolt key? Mine Stripped!

I was in the process of switching to my winter wheels and tires and the key for my locking lug bolt stripped out. The dealer says there is no way to find a set with that same key and they may have to damage the wheel to get it off. I dont know if there are 5 different types or 500 but if someone has the same key I will be happy to pay shipping both ways so that I can get my last summer wheel off. Alternativly, if someone has a trick for getting these off I'll take that too!

The picture is of one of the bolts that I have removed.

Thanks,
Brad

Have them weld another bolt on top and take it off. Don't let them make more of a project out of it that what it is. Remember they want to sell you a wheel not another lug bolt.

Get your car from the Stealer and take to a shop that can do some welding. Have them weld another bolt ontop of this as TX76513 suggested. You then use you lug wrench and get it off or do same for each wheel. Buy yourself a new locking lug set. Cheaper...

I guess this is already unlocked? So the problem is just how to remove the one that's in the wheel now?

Yes, 3 of the 4 are removed, only one is remaining. I dont know if welding on a bolt is possible because the locking lug is both recessed into the wheel making access difficult and it is chrome. Has anyone done this?

I have never had to destroy a wheel to get a keyed lug off and I have run across some monsters.

You can also drill it out.

buy a deep 12 point socket, just a size smaller then the locks head. Hammer the socket over the lock lug. Then with a breaker bar turn it off. Now hammering the socket on tight is the key. Getting he lock off i the main purpose, not trying to save the socket or the lug lock.
I have done this many a time. Especially pulling stuff offat a Pick n Pay salvage yard.

That looks like a 'McGard' bolt

http://www.mcgard.com/

Might be worth emailing them the picture to get a replacement key.

Took it to a shop that I trust and they welded a nut onto the head of the bolt and the nut twisted off. They tried three different approaches, welding the nut on, welding a washer on to get a good weld, then a nut to the washer, and welding multiple washers stacked to bring it to the surface of the wheel then a nut on the washers and they all twisted off. They were using a wire welder and the guy doing it has been welding for 30+ years. They said thats never failed him before.

To drill it out what type drill bit do I need?

And, does anyone know where I can get a style 170 AMG rim 17" x 7.5" for cheap? I have a feeling this rim is going to be damaged. Style 170 was used on the 99 and 00 CLK430 and SLK230's I believe.

I cant see how these sockets would help to remove a round lug? Has anyone used these?

When driven in a counter-clockwise direction by an impact/air/ muscle wrench the socket "bites" into the bolt and hopefully unscrews same.
