Summer tires in winter

How will summer tires perform in the winter? I was curious if anyone has driven in snow or slush with summer tires. I know it's not reccommended, but I was curious anyhow.

I had AAA rated Falken Ziex summer tires on my '98 Acura CL and I couldn't even back up in my own driveway when it snowed. The tires would break free and spin immediately. I had a second set of rims with Blizzaks mounted on them and the car felt VERY safe with them.

My Porsche 911 Carrera 4 (awd) got caught in a freak early snowstorm before I had a chance to put on its winter tires and I have to say that it was one of the scariest driving experiences of my life. The awd system was absolutely worthless and the car skidded and slid all over the road all due to the summer tires (Michelin Pilot Sports) I was using. I'll take a rear drive car with dedicated winter tires any day over an suv/awd vehicle with just all seasons when it comes to driving in the snow.

I think the summer compound is also designed to get sticky in hotter weather, which makes it harder and slicker in colder weather. My Kumho KH11 summer tires are terrible below 50 degrees for a few miles, absolutely dry.

What Jason said.. I had 235/40R18 Dunlop Sport MAXX' on the W8 - QUATTRO system underneath. I was able to get moving but stopping & turning was a different ballgame. Next day I had my 235/45R17 Blizzak LM-25's on and it was a blast !! I backed out of a plow wake in my parking lot so high, my rear license plate wasn't visible.... I had fun...
