good performance tires for the money

I've used some Generals before, UHP tire. They are cheap and wear good. If you have an Americas tire by your town, they have a great warranty also! Just wanted to pass it on if you are looking for a budget price but looking for performance!

I just put some Exclaim UHPs on my Roadmaster Wagon, I was also impressed.

That's what I ended up getting. They are a great tire for the money. Good wear, not loud, and handle great. I've had a couple replaced under warranty, after hitting a pot hole, and another driving on glass.

I tried a set but, they got unacceptably noisy after about 10 thousand miles

Out of curiosity,

Will the manufacturer do anything for a customer if they get complaints about tires being unacceptably noisy after 10,000 miles?

Luke, what would you recommend as a better choice than these Generals? Is that too broad of a question? I made need some new ones before too long and might as well start planning now . . .

My wife and I ran General UXP's on our '93 Caprice Wagon in 275 40 17 for about 15k miles with no issues. They tracked great, wore well and handled wonderfully.

Dee8go, I'm running Bridgestone Potenza RE960AS on my SDL right now, they aren't as great as the Kumho KH11 as far as handling but they do ride and handle nicer than the MXV4 Primacy.

Honestly the generals hold up great. Even if you go to tirerack and look at the ratings from customers they rate the tire very well. I'm surprised that even a tire rack guy will say they aren't that good. For the money they are an excellent tire.

Of these two tires in size 235/45-17 for '00 E430, General Altimax UHP and Sumitomo HTR Z-III, which is better in terms of handling, ride and noise ?

It just occured to me that my SEC has the AMG wheels from a CLK on it. What is the criteria I should use in choosing new tires? Obviously, they have to be sized for the rims, but are there other considerations relative to the particular car?
