snow tire shopping season

a thick layer of frost this morning was a reminder for me to speed up my hunt for suitable snow tires for my 300e. i've seen tire rack's offerings and discount tire's free shipping. interestingly, one of the better deals seems to be costco, offering Michelin Alpins for $77 on 195 65 15's, mounted and balanced (includes the usual lifetime flat repair, rotate & balance). they also have bfgoodrich snows for even less money but i'm lost as to what those tires really are...

what have you guys found?

jsmith,

I've used the michelin artic alpins on my old 1991 300E and have been more than pleased with them. They make a dramatic improvement in the cold weather handling.
In fact, I just sold my 1991 but the buyer did not want the snow tires (which are mounted and balanced on OEM rims). The tires have about 3000 miles on them. E-mail me at sjoeypollak@aol.com if you are interested.

john,
your dealer quoted you on arctic alpins though right? the pilot alpins are quite a bit more money. lifetime rotate and balance and flat fixes too? i thought that $77 wasn't shabby since mount and balance alone runs around $20/tire so that beats tirerack. had a flat recently and that set me back an easy $20. just some thoughts...

hate those air wrenches! i guess there are all manner of Costco experiences out there. the local one uses the air wrenches to get lugs off but hand + torque wrenches them back on. they even refused to touch a cross-threaded bolt that i had as i mentioned previously. this was on the family van and not the benz.

i guess i ought to check out some of the other shops. the local one that i used to frequent underwent a change in management and was responsible for the cross threaded bolt. i had a lifetime rotate and balance with them too but i'm not going back there...
