Tire recommendations

300 d & cd owners,

Its time for me to replace the tires on my 300 cd. I would like to get the opinion of some of you 300 cd & d owners of what your choice of tire manufacturer you prefer. I'm looking for a TOURING type of tire. Also, the tires currently on the vehicle have worn badly on the inside part of the tread. Could this be a problem with the camber? Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.

Marks88,

I'm a bridgestone type. Am sure that there are many quality tires out there but for many years now I've purchased wet weather bridgestones for very reasonable price. They are pro-rated to 60 or 70 k miles. What I like is the ride and price. Have never had a problem with balance or round. Nice, quiet highway tire.

Also, consider one size larger (205's I think). Many opinions on this but from a standpoint of how it looks, I just believe the spec tires are just too small. You can go up one size without touching anywhere and with little impact on true speed.

I've got Michelin X-Ones (205) on my 85 300CD. Been a great tire, and seem to last forever.

If you've got odd wear on the current tires, you'd probably want to fix that before getting new ones.

Take a look at the Yokohoma Avid series too.

Bad experience with Bridgestone Eagers (howling at speed, required frequent balancing, uneven wear). Nothing but praise for Michelin MXVs.

Will also vote for the Michelin Energy MXV4 GreenX (195/70 HR-14) tire. The 300 came with "no name" tires and when it was time to replace them I went with the Michelins. I have always hade great success with them and will soon replace the Bridgstones on my wifes 190 with Michelin too, FWIW IMHO.

I have Bridgestone RE930i's that I got at our local warehouse club. They've been surprisingly good for a tire that cost $80 mounted and balanced. For the next set though, I think I'm going to go back to Michelin MXV4's though. They're way more expensive ($115 M & B) but what the hell. Only live once right?

I checked out the tires on my 'new' 300CD. They are Michelin Rainforce MXV or something like that. The patterns don't really look that great, but so what?

The car is sooo comfortable with 70-profile tires! I'm so used to the W124 with 55-profile tires. They do look better though.

One tire that I'd love to try is the Pirelli P6000. Too bad they don't make 'em in 195/70/14

Tire recommendations

Thanks to all that supplied their input about their favorite tires.
It looks like Michelin gets the nod from the small sampling. I have always like Michelins also. A little pricey ,but a great tire. I recently purchased Continentals for my 300e. So far, so good.
They are a very smooth & quiet riding tire.
Thanks again.......

I just put a set of Michelin Pilot XGT H4's on my 1984 300SD. Very impressed so far. Wet weather traction, compared to the Toyo Proxes, is superb. It was raining last night, and with the Toyo's I had to really be gentle with the throttle while accelerating or else the rear tires would break traction. The Michelins felt like they were stuck like glue a lot more than the Toyo's, and finally allowed me to feel safe doing 75+ mph in the rain. For $89 in 205-65R15 92H I am very pleased so far.

Goodyear

I just (2 days ago) put aquatread 3's on my 300 SD 205/70/14 and I love them. Smooth ride great handling in snow rain etc. have had all of these in the past two days . Also have never had any problems with goodyear tires. Just my two cents.

I'm going to have to disagree with Robert on the rain traction of the toyo proxes. I have the Proxes H4, or something to that effect, and unless i REALLY work at it, i can't break traction in the rain with my 300SD(and it is running right-i hope...) i have to floor it, and crank the wheel waaay over to get em to spin. The proxes i am talking about are the rain tires that they make, so possibly that makes a differance, but i am simply amazed with how well they hold ground wet and dry. No longevity facts yet, as i just got them about 3 months ago, but i absolutely love them.

my choice

is the Dunlop SP sport A2s. They are AA traction rated, A temp rated, and a little over $50 at the tire rack... I saw them for $44 at sears.

The best Tire I've ever used

When my car needed tires, I went with the Avon CR 338s. Some of you have heard my opinions of these, but let me state it again. If you can find them (should be avail at Cooper tire outlets) GET THEM. They are the high-end line of Cooper, another great tire (American) but Avons are made in the UK. Made my car an excellent performer all around, and they look great. They run around $90 each, and I feel they are a more robust tire than a contemporary Michelin, which is really a soft tire. For those of you who have never heard of Avon, look at any vintage racing photo, and they are OEM on such names as Rolls Royce, Bently, and Triumph. Truly a pedigree tire (tyre) for a pedigree car. I use the 195/70-R14 size... I will always own a set of these...
