Optimal Tire Pressure for Fuel Economy? 124 300D 2.5
Hey everyone,
Just got my first full tank of my daily commute under my belt and it looks like the 300D 2.5 is reporting 32 mpg. Not bad, but not great. This tank did see more around town driving than normal. It also saw a good amount of idling in drive thru and in my driveway so I am hoping to see a slight improvement on Wednesday when I refill. Just out of curiosity, what is the optimal tire pressure to achieve higher fuel economy? I don't know what they're at now but the LOOK kind of low, just eye-balling it. My tires are 205/65/15 Michelin Pimacy's. It could also be the winter diesel taking its toll on my fuel economy numbers. I dont really have any data to establish "normal" economy numbers with though, just one run of 39mpg for 165 miles at 60-65mph.

I use the max rating on the tire, this will give you performance and the least rolling resistance.

Make sure to fill your tires after maybe 1/2 hour of driving so they warm up a bit. Every night it gets cold your tire pressure will drop but will rise again after a bit of driving or after warming up in the sun. I see a 5-8psi variance between dead cold in the morning and afternoon warming plus a drive.
If you fill while cold, your tires will be a few psi overinflated which will lead to uneven wear. Phil Forrest

I usually go a few pound shy of max pressure in the rear, and I usually keep the suggested difference between the front and rear. So I'll run the fronts a few pounds lower than the rears. Running them up to the max will over pressurize them when they get hot, which can cause bad tread wear. The number in the door jam is for the best ride and handling, not for best milage.

I look on the sidewall and see what the mfg states as the highest recommended pressure, and go with that.
I really attribute this to the higher milage we are getting on the 240. I think we have 37,000 on the cheap Chinese tires so far, and if we get 45K Iam good with that. Charlie

Select your next tires from the energy efficiency / hybrid specialized ones that are coming out if you want to buy a mile or two per gallon back.
