The most pronounced symptom is "wandering" on the road. It prevents an accurate toe setting and gives a little play in the steering wheel.

If the 126 is like the other MB's on which I've replaced idler arm bushings, the answer is no. You can leave the tie rod ends connected to the arm, remove the pivot bolt and swing the arm out of the way.
