Figure at least every four years, a clogged filter can cause issues througout the fuel delivery system- even shorten the life of other components. But the manual is the BEST guide to maintenance.

If your a sufficient-properly trained - PROFESSIONAL mechanic and know how to use a pipe cutter ( not a saw ) to open a filter, you can do that to assess the quality of the fuel tank and fuel. THIS IS DANGEROUS - fuel (fumes) can ignite.

also this is a time to check fuel lines and brake lines runnng underneath the chassis - not the only time.

And avoid running your tank down to empty or near empty. Helps thin out contaminants in the fuel and cool the fuel pump.
