Don't jump to conclusions. I teach lots of courses with a wide age range of students. The youngsters immediate leaps of understanding are usually misunderstandings. The reason they only read once is because they think they understand it the first time when they dont. You, on the other hand, being more mature, can recognize your own lack of understanding and keep working until you get it. Almost without a doubt you are learning more.
My favorite older student was a 79 yr old guy I had about 6 yrs ago. Great thinker but about halfway thru the semester he had to quite to get quadruple bypass surgery. I thought I'd never see him again. 4 yrs later he shows up again, back to his old self, and wanting to complete the course. He now wants to take my Scottish Enlightenment class and go to Scotland with us. Give me older students anyday.
