My '92 500SEL gets a whopping 10-12 mpg in city driving, but on the highway that figure soars to maybe 16-17! This not a car for the faint of heart at the gas station, to put it mildly....not when 25 gallons could drain your wallet of $70 or so. But then fuel economy is not why these cars were built....moving 3 tons around with a 5-liter V-8 was never designed to be fuel-efficient. And the window sticker on mine says that a $2000 "pay to play" tax (gas guzzler) was imposed to make that impressive mileage all that much more enjoyable
