T. W. you are on the money
I finally got the thing apart and I can see something wrong - the offending exhaust tube was either not all there or was eaten away (by leaking exhaust ?) - the flat surface of the flange where the manifold bolts up the head is severly pitted and not all there where it needs to be flat at wide (to get a good seal).
I'm sure a machine shop could plane it smooth, I'll have to work this.
the car has 280K, although it has been consuming coolant (slowly) as of late, I've seen the temp get a little higher than I'd like on a few occasions (before stopping and putting more in). Looks like I need a parts 240D (for a home head rebuild) or a 5cyl turbo to **swap** *insert evil laugh here).
I'm gonna flat-plate-sand the manifold as good as I can and throw it back together things are more clear to me now (but I still need a car for work on monday)
