I wouldn't worry about getting all the old pad and adhesive off. I was originally worried about the same thing but decided the risk to my paint from stray solvent wasn't worth it.
So I just scraped off the old stuff and used 3M SUPER Trim adhesive. I checked my
old post and it's been 3 1/2 years now (time flies!) and it is still sticking with no problems.
