Installing a pre-turbo pyrometer is the ONLY way to tell if you have everything tuned right. Mabye you can get another 50hp out of it, mabye you are already running at 1300*f.
Depending on when the smoke happens, you may or may not need to raise the boost. If it's off the line, there is nothing you can do short of turning down the fuel or installing NOS (until enough boost build up). If it's during the mid-high rpm range, then yes, slowly turn up the boost until it goes away.
My belief is one NEEDS a pyro gauge before touching any of the fuel controls other than the ALDA. That's just me. I've seen plenty of melted pistons, warped heads, thrown rods, and had my own over-boosting experience to make me be weary about "performance" tuning.
