I recently had a similar problem with my ML. After it was warmed up, and only after it was warmed up, and only intermitently at that, the engine would shuddder and die when in gear and brakes applied. I thought it might be something with the EGR system. Went to auotzone, and the codes came back EGR Flow or something like that. So I pulled the EGR valve off and sure enough, the area around the plunger was completed caked up with carbon. Cleaned it all out. Pulled the tube too to se if it was plugged, but it was ok. After I cleaned the seat and surrounding area, I tested it with my mitivac, and it seemed fine. Reinstalled and the problem went away.
But it most definately shook, rattled, and rolled before it died.

Go to autozone and see what it comes back with.
