Before you remove anything, check the alternator (ALT) brushes. They can be removed with out taking the ALT out. You get at them from underneath the car.

On the bottom of ALT near where the power cable goes into the ALT, there are 2 screws. Remove these screws and the voltage regulator and brush assembly will come out. If brushes are worn to less that 1/4 inch, replace the brushes.

Replace the regulator and brush assembly into the ALT. See if the problem is cured. If not, replace the regulator and try again.

If you have an Auto Zone store near you they will do a free ALT test.

All the battery you need (#49) is available from Auto Zone for $65 + tax.
