Oh yeah, low profile tires will chew up your budget in a hurry. I thought the money I shelled out for Dunlops was expensive, until I looked at prices for 17" and 18" tires! Those are decisions that should probably go into decision-making to buy a car, but once you commit to it, I think you just have to accept it as a fact of life. (Or go back to 16 inch wheels.)

$4-$5K per year for parts?

That's crazy. That comes to $333 - $416 per month. You could lease a new MB for that or get something else new and not deal with the hastles as you would have warranty to cover any expenses.

See this is one of the things that I was pondering about.
Even though I love my car and the driving experience that I have with it, sometimes I look at the numbers and wonder if I am doing the right thing by keeping it.
Since I drive over 20K miles per year, I was also thinking about getting a truck to use as a daily driver and a nice weekend car.
For $4k-$5k per year, I would definetly get a new car.
If I were spending $4-5k per year, I would consider a new car, but even at that rate you have to figure what you're losing through depreciation. I mean, I'm spending what I consider a lot of money fixing my 300E, but at least the car's paid off. So what I spend on expendables and repairs is the true cost of ownership for me.

Although, I guess if I leased the car, then I wouldn't pay for depreciation either. But then I'd wonder what I'd do when the lease was up.
