You can easily remove the tail lense and clean the inside of it. The soot is actually on the inside of the lens and cleans out easily with soap and the water spicket. Be careful not to break any of the studs off. The plastic is brittle that holds the metals stubs. I cleaned the lenses on my 116 and it looked MUCH better. The rights side will have some in it too you just won't notice it until you clean the left side. You may want to splurge and replace the lens gaskets, but that probably wouldn't be worth it. It takes an 8mm to remove the lens. The nuts are in the inside of the trunk after you have the cover off you'll see what I mean.
Now I just wish my SDL used the same plastic as on the 123 and 116. My reverse lights are yellow from age, and there's nothing I can do about that except replace them.
Thanks
David
