Two words, my friend: Pawn Shops.
You can pick up compressors almost anytime. The guy I deal with won't sell me junk, either, so I buy with confidence. Most places will give you a 48-hour guarantee. Just take it home and run it for a while; make sure it build pressure, doesn't leak or overheat, etc...
I just bought another Reddy heater from my favorite pawn shop... a propane model this time. That makes 2 in my garage!
