On the condoms: I can only hope that, paraphrasing Frank Oz in the Blues Brothers, that they were not "soiled"...eewwwww....

Anyway, I'd definitely look very strongly at that seal under the boot lid. The lip of this lid was the ONLY place on my car that had any rust (now eradicated). This gasket is expensive (around $70-90?) but IF YOU BUY THE OEM PART, it's very easy to install (assuming that you have a channel left to install it into). I bought an aftermarket replacement, it fit like crap, and after struggling with it and a good part of a tube of Wurth weatherstripping cement, I tossed it and $50 into the garbage before buying the original MB part. Most of my other aftermarket seals fit fine, though.

I've seen a 560sl at a dealership with this seal bad, where the convertible top dry-rotted and disintegrated as it was unfolded!

You should address this problem ASAP.
