"So, how picky is the accounting profession with reguards to dress anyway? Thank for any information."
If you were the interviewer, what do you think they would be seeking in a new employee beyond the assumed excellent grades.
1. Somewhat low geek index. They want to try to figure out how introverted you are. Will you be able to get along with co-workers and clients. Smile.
2. Dress is important because most accounting firms send their accounts to
a variety of customer locations. Based on my travels to customer locations in major cities over the last 10 years, it is obvious that things are more casual now. I interact with a few CPA's at these clients. They always were a tie, but often not a suit coat or sport coat.
You can take the opportunity to dress more casually after you get the job, not before you get the job.
3. They want people who are ambitious, but moldable. Account jobs with CPA firms are brutal for the first several years, so they might ask you about just how hard you are willing to work. Like sacrifice all for the company.
Tell them you will do whatever it takes. Don't ask about how much vacation you get in the first year! You can only quit if you get hired.
4. Try to demonstrate good listening skills. Pay attention and look the interviewer in the eyes. Don't look down or away when pondering you answer.
5. Get a hair cut and a manicure. The hair cut thing is not as applicable with today's hair styles, but when I interviewed with, at that time, Big 8 accounting firms, I got my middle 70's long hair cut shorter. Manicure sounds kind of overkill, but you have a lot on the line.
6. Buy yourself a very nice leather portfolio and carry it to the interview with a copy of your resume. If there is even a chance of rain, carry a nice umbrella.
7. Learn something about each firm prior to the interview. Then ask some questions that let the interviewer know you have done your homework.
8. Firm handshake, not limp noodle.
