I had a battery explode 1.5' from my face. I was under the hood of a Golf, and checking for spark. It had spark! No damage done, there's actually a lot worse in the shop to get in your eyes than battery acid. For what it's worth, it was a spanish made battery in the white case, the same that MB uses for OE.
