Probable best to get a cd manual or paper manual.

Historically one of the easiest replacements on a MB. Underneath car...may or may not have to put it on jack stands. I think it takes a 17mm wrench to replace.

I believe it's tied to the idler arm and center drag link. Shouldn't take much more than an hour to replace since this is your first time... second time is probably 15 minutes.

I have had a 72 mb and a couple of 89's. Both had steering dampers.. very similar.
