The only real downside that I know of to Windows is it's popularity. Since MS has 95% of the market, all the hackes, virii, and malware are aimed at Windows boxen. I've not used Vista, but I imagine the same will apply. with MS, you really need to be up on your security and infestation-cleaning skills.

For the Mac and Linux, the big drawback is compatibility. Never used a Mac, but I've played around with Linux. It's clunkier and less intuitive than windows, and some things I need for work just won't run under the penguin.
