Nope. The 1996 Homelink systems installed on the visors of MB cars are meant to grab a single code, store it, and repeat it. They cannot work with all the garage door operators of 1996. If the system uses any type of rolling code, it won't work because the visor-mounted operator does not learn the sequence of rolling codes.
I worked in the garage door industry for a spell, and this was an issue that frustrated many owners of early HomeLink equipped cars. My own 1998 C230's visor-mounted Homelink system was one of the first years of rolling code capable systems. Also, it has to be a "Homelink" capable system, but most are.
