My old-style filter ('86) had never been changed to the new style, pleated-paper, filter, so I freaked when I opened 'er up and did not find what I expected. Remove the nut, tan plastic, and spring, and lift out the steel plate; underneath is a fiber filter and a steel ring. Toss all this and install the new-style replacement filter.
