The two trannies are pretty much the same at least through 4th gear. The 722.5 trans has an added electronically controlled overdrive addition so it is actually a 5spd.

I definitely wouldn't drive the car if I were plannning to fix that trans. You will be pumping clutch material everywhere it shouldn't be including the torque convertor and valve body which can cause future problems unless you totally replace them.
