The main problem with SDI is that steps to thwart it will cost way, way less than SDI itself.

The multiple scattering of foil balloons that look just like the warhead to radar would cost a tiny fraction of just what we've spent on SDI so far. In the vacuum of space, these balloons travel at the same speed as the warhead, just a few hundred yards away from it.

Whether the Russians have the maneuverable missile on line now or 10 years from now, it's way naive to think that our longtime adversaries are going to sit back and let a working (??!??!?) SDI propel us into unchallenged global supremacy.

We damn sure wouldn't sit still for that and the Russians, for all their faults, are no dummies. It is their vehicle we now use, for the most part, to service the space station.
