A simple "cease and desist(spelling???) request via the US Mail will keep a creditor from calling or showing up at your place of employment. My personal experience is that some lenders are far more prone to lost payments and other screw-ups than others. I also have a pet peeve with lenders who use call centers in India...even though the people allegedly speak English, there is a cultural barrier and some language barrier that debtors find frustrating.

In defense of debtors, it can be nearly impossible to call the lender's 800# and actually talk to a live person to discuss the account. I also see some tendency for a collector to tell the debtor something, then when they call back next time, there are no notes about the conversation and when they get a different collector they have to start from scratch and the arrangements are never what were agreed-to the last time.
