What's the hood prop rod? These cars generally don't come with a prop rod, they're spring hinged to stay up when the hood is raised. There is a lock on one of the hinges that you have to remember to release when you're bringing the hood down from the vertical position, but I'd imagine that would be pretty hard to miss.
