On a W220 chassis the steering knuckle must be removed to install ball joints..around 2.5-3 hrs @side..Ball joints are $66 ea list 220-333-07-27 OR 220-333-03-27 (optional numbers).

Noise emitting from the steering rack area would be related to the tie-rod(s) or tie-rod ends.
