For the beginner buy Craftsman, you can't go wrong. A lot of the cheap stuff out their is junk frankly, you do get what you pay for in regards to tools.

I'd start with a nice set of metric open ended wrench's. A nice assortment of sockets, with extensions. You want them in at least 3/8 and 1/2 drive. Get a cheater bar as well. Throw in a set of screw drivers and a few different types of pliers, and you are off to a good start.
