Can Scripts Alter Internet Explorer URL History ???

OK, hopefully some Internet Explorer and/or virus/spyware/popup guru out there can help.

I was surfing the web the other day and got a really nasty series of popups. I mean REALLY nasty. Locked up my PC and I had to hard power it off. Booted back up, cleared temp files, cleared cookies, etc. and all seemed well so I went on surfing as usual. Now, a couple days later, when I pull down the address bar and look in there, there is a bunch of CRAP URLs! I mean really sicko stuff that I definitely did not visit. And I know it wasn't my wife - she wouldn't even know where to go to find that stuff.

I did a search on google, and there seems to be two schools of thought: 1) items stored in the address bar are only there if you typed them in and hit enter; or 2) a script or popup can put them in there and either you hit enter or it somehow simulates that command, resulting in the item being stored in the address bar. Obviously #2 is possible because it happened to me personally, but has anyone else out there experienced this?

I really have no desire to view gay paraplegic midget clown p0rn. In fact, my fingers began shaking just typing that out. How did stuff like that get in there??? After clearing my address bar history I tried and tried to replicate the popup scenario by visiting the same sites, but somehow I'm unable.

Any ideas? I don't want it to happen again. HELP !!!
