I once had a low-mileage, 12-year-old car that started squealing during startup. I noticed that the belt looked fine, but the records showed the belt was original. Further examination showed the belt was stretched to the limit of tensioner travel -- verified by comparison with a new belt.

So beyond a visual examination, check the belt for stretch.
