Interview attire

I've had the same job for a long time, but I'm looking for another (sales) job now. I have heard it said that you should always wear suits to job interviews.

I rarely if ever wear a suit anymore. I usually wear something like gray or tan slacks, tie, and sport coat or blazer. Do any of you have an opinion about the best course to take? Does it really matter that much? I usually try to dress however my clients dress. In this case I am not sure what the standard may be.

Thanks for your input.
