I have never, to my knowledge, hit a turtle, but I've seen plenty of them on the roads around here. When circumstances permit, we get the unsquashed ones off the road.

This gopher tortoise was hunkered down between the two southbound lanes of the very same highway 27, not far from Lake Jackson. That section of 27 is, as you noted, a less than optimal place to be a turtle.
