AC experts help please!!

I went to change my compressor shaft seal today using th instructions from this article: www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_Nippondenso_rebuild/911_Nippondenso_rebuild.htm

but when I got to the seal it was totally different from the old one. The old one is a single flat seal only about 3/8" thick held in by a snap ring. The new seal is two parts, total thickness of about 1". It has a carbon surface that is spring loaded.

Heres the kicker, the new assembly fits in there and the clutch bolts on fine, with the clutch nose pressing against the outer metal piece on the outer seal, compressing the spring loaded inner seal. Only there is no way to put the snap ring back since the new seals are thicker. Also, the kit didn't even contain a new snap ring.

Will this work?? I am about to put the compressor back in the car and see if the system will hold a vaccuum. Has anyone run into this?

PS the compressor is not original, it is a reman installed by a local shop.
