If the "dogbone" is properly seated in the brake band and the piston, the piston can be pushed well past the point where the clip can be installed. You can use a few dabs of grease to keep the dogbone in place when you install piston. I've stuck the dogbone to the piston and held the piston at an angle (outside facing down) to engage in brake band pocket before the teflon outer ring meets the bore in the transmission case.
