If it were my car, I'd change the oil to a Diesel rated 15w-40 and drive it as hard and hot as I could. The diesel oil does clean gunked valve lifters. Then recheck the compression.
The previous 190 I had was an '87 2.3. I thought it was a basket case but the more I looked the more I found simple maintenance neglect caused a lot of problems (infrequent oil changes, old fuel filter etc).
